LAND OF OPEN DISTANCES
In 1991, the Rhön was recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. With an area of almost 2500 square kilometers, the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve extends across the federal states of Bavaria, Hesse, and Thuringia.
The aim of the biosphere reserve is to protect natural and cultural diversity, promote sustainable (regional) development, as well as (environmental) education, communication, research, and monitoring.

The Rhön impresses not only during daylight as a land of open spaces, but especially at night. Located in the center of Germany and with relatively sparse settlement, you can still experience natural nightscapes with a starry sky here. On clear moonless nights, thousands of stars, the Milky Way, the zodiacal light, and other faint celestial objects are visible in the Rhön. But moonlit nights also impress, as the faint silvery glow drapes like a veil over the nocturnal hilly landscape
The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön in the tri-border region of Bavaria, Hesse, and Thuringia was recognized as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) in August 2014

The Rhön captivates with its originality. Bare basalt domes, fragrant herb meadows, vast plateaus, and extensive moors continue to shape the face of the Rhön as they always have. Its full, often rugged beauty unfolds especially when viewed slowly, such as when walking, hiking, cycling, or climbing.
At the same time, you can also marvel at the rich plant and animal life. If you listen carefully, you may hear a red kite circling. A dream!
Dense forests, gurgling streams, rocky peaks, and endless expanses - the Rhön is magical! We would like to particularly recommend four of our favorite places to you: the highest elevations of Thuringia, Hesse, and Bavaria, as well as a moor where all three states meet. Here, there is something to discover for everyone - whether you are a connoisseur, athlete, or family person.
The Rhön Embassy is our passion project. We are even more delighted when we can infect our guests with our enthusiasm and they visit us again and again.
